BIrth Frequently Asked Questions
Birth photography is a unique and wonderful way to document your growing family. I have photographed births for many years and love the excitement and anticipation of a miracle. I absolutely love this part of my work. I offer birth photography in all settings - home, birth center, hospital, and by c-section. Half of the session cost is due at booking.
I offer a 30 minute consultation near my studio in Downtown Dallas or by phone. During this time, we discuss your birth plans, answer any questions or concerns you may have and get to know one another. I believe it is important that you be comfortable with every person who is attending your birth. Some moms choose to have maternity portraits done and we can take that time to get to know one another better as well.
Once you have decided that you want to have your birth photographed, please contact me right away. I limit myself to only a handful of births each month. They fill up fast! I want to make sure that your due date is available. When you hire me, the birth coverage fee is due. This makes sure your due date remains open for you.. If you aren't sure whether I am booked or not, please contact me. Depending on the situation, we may be able to make it work.
A 50% retainer is due at the time of booking to secure services. Around 36 weeks, the balance of the session purchase is due. This fee will include the products & services listed in your booking quote.
On the day of birth
On your baby's birth day, I arrive when you are in active labor, which is typically 5-6 cm with regular contractions. I try to be as discrete as possible at capturing the emotions and excitement of this day. I may wander around... just ignore me! I am looking for those small details that will make all the difference. There may be times when I am not shooting. This is normal. I respect the birth process and want to be as discrete as possible. If I sense that you need space, I will give it to you. I remain at your birth (unless it stalls and you send me home until you need me again) until your baby arrives. I then remain to document the first 1-2 hours after birth. If you have family you want included, they should be there at this time or your can add on a Fresh 48 session. Once the initial newborn assessment is complete and I have captured your new baby and family, I will leave you to rest!
If you are planning a c-section, we will discuss the logistics more in depth. Please check with your OB and hospital to confirm that it is possible. I am happy to speak with anyone who may need more information. I have photographed c-sections at almost every local hospital and know it can be done! I will arrive 1.5 hours prior to your scheduled time to get all the preparation before the birth of your baby and stay thru the birth and afterwards to get all those special moments. I especially love photographing these births. Mama's often miss so much during this time. I feel like I am able to bridge that gap and help them connect with their baby and birth experience. It is wonderful!
It typically takes around 4-6 weeks to process your entire birth. However, we do blog your social media files within the first few days so you have them to share! Once your images are ready, you will receive a link to your online gallery and be able to view and download your images.
Fresh 48 Documentation
We also offer Fresh 48 Sessions which are similar to birth photography, only don't cover the labor and birth. They are for capturing those special moments shortly after your little one arrives.
Consultation, Booking & Payment
The consultation and booking process are the same for a Fresh 48 as they are for a birth. You can choose to book via email or phone as well, if you prefer. Half of the session cost is due at booking with the balance due at 36 weeks.
Once your baby has arrived
Please note that one of the big differences between birth and fresh 48 documentation is the on-call status. When you are booking a birth session, we come when you are in labor. With a Fresh 48 session, we work around other appointments and births within the first 48-72 hours after your baby arrives. When your baby is born, you contact us to let us know. At that point, we will let you know when we can schedule to come during regular business hours. You do not need to call in the middle of the night to let us know your baby is here. You just call in the morning. We will then come at the scheduled time to do a documentary style session. This may mean we capture you feeding or dressing the baby, baby meeting family for the first time, or bringing baby home. This is also a good way to capture an herbal bath after your little one arrives. Sessions last around 60-90 minutes.
